Purim is a major Jewish holiday similar to Christmas in feeling, with the exchanging of gifts, feasting, parades and festivals. Every year, the entire Book of Esther is read aloud in synagogues in remembrance of God’s liberation of the Jewish people from the ancient Persian empire. This year, Purim happens on March 6th and 7th.
The Revised Geneva Translation, from which the text is taken, is perfect for this celebration. It is designed to be spoken and heard by a modern audience. The RGT is a 21st Century update of the very first widely-distributed version of the Holy Bible in English, The Geneva Bible. Just as in all preceding centuries, Biblical text in the 1500’s was meant to be heard and seen, as much as read, because so many of those who received it were illiterate (especially Gentiles) and needed to memorize it and speak it back to each other often in order to facilitate meditation.
As the children of Israel, either natural-born or adopted (John 1:12), Purim is a great opportunity to celebrate together and learn more about each other during the season leading up to Resurrection Sunday. The zip file also includes a pdf of the kindle version.
