Clement Clarke Moore’s “A Visit from St.  Nicholas,” universally known as “’Twas the Night Before Christmas,” stands as arguably the most famous poem ever written by an American.  First published anonymously in the Troy Sentinel on December 23, 1823, the verse is generally believed to have been composed by Moore, a scholar and professor of Oriental and Greek literature, primarily to amuse his six children during a Christmas gift-giving tradition in 1822.  He never intended it for publication, considering it a trivial piece of “unscholarly” light verse compared to his serious theological work. 

The poem’s popularity exploded immediately after its anonymous debut, spreading rapidly through newspapers and almanacs across the United States. Moore only officially claimed authorship in 1844 to correct growing misattributions, though he had acknowledged it privately as early as 1837.  Its enduring legacy lies in its profound cultural importance: the poem single-handedly constructed the modern image of Santa Claus.  Before Moore, St. Nicholas was often depicted as a stern, thin bishop or a disciplinary figure. Moore transformed him into a “jolly old elf”—plump, cheerful, bearded, and flying a sleigh pulled by eight named reindeer.  This narrative successfully shifted Christmas traditions away from public revelry and religious solemnity toward a magical, family-centric celebration focused on children and domestic tranquility. In other words, “Twas the Night Before Christmas” had a very similar overall effect on Christmas as another famous work published around that same time by an Englishman named Charles Dickens - “A Christmas Carol”.
